So, what can you expect when visiting Van der Walt Optometrist?
We aim to make your eye care experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. We try to serve you as our patient with excellence, and it is for this reason that we do not just provide a simple, easy eye test. No, we do an extensive eye examination on every patient who walks through our doors.
Firstly, every patient will have a Tonometry test, where we will measure the Intra-ocular Pressure. Then, for every patient, we do something called Fundus Photography to assess the health of your retina. It is where we take an in-depth photo of your retina to look in detail at your optic nerve. This process is only the beginning. Here at Van der Walt, we go even further.
We do an OCT scan to examine the underlying cell structure of your retina so that if there is anything of note, we can pick it up early and treat it quickly with no hesitation. We are the only optometrists using this technology in the Free State and Northern Cape.
We do a Slitlamp examination to assess the health of your eyes’ anterior chamber, leading to a Corneal Topography assessment to determine any corneal irregularities, which is essential for those who would like to obtain contact lenses. This process is crucial to follow.
Next will be all the prelim tests, where we test the integrity of the eye muscles. Next, we do a color vision assessment, depth perception assessment, and an assessment of your eye’s Visual Acuity. When doing the Visual Acuity test, we see how well you can see with your current glasses and without. We then do a refraction test to see what lenses would be necessary for you to see as best as needed.
When the above is done, we sit and discuss what your daily life is like and what your need is. Knowing this lets us establish and define your visual needs and create the perfect fit lenses. We will even help you choose a frame that best suits your face shape and daily needs, one that is comfortable or could make a fashion statement. We can play around with shapes, sizes, and colours.
In the end, a complete quotation will be set up and handed to you so that you know precisely what your medical aid will pay for and what you need. Your spectacles or contact lenses will then be ordered and prepared at the quickest time for your convenience.
Every day, I get a question from my patients: Is a cheap, ready-made reader that you buy from the pharmacy unhealthy for your eyes? The short answer is yes, and no.
For starters, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. We all know that your diet significantly influences your overall health, and your eye health is no exception.
