Glaucoma week

WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

Glaucoma is a condition characterized by damage to the optic nerve, which may lead to gradual loss of vision and decreased visual fields, associated frequently, but not necessarily, with increased intra-ocular pressure.

INCREASED RISKS FOR GLAUCOMA

Older aged individuals, increased intra-ocular pressure, individuals from African ancestry, a thin cornea, family history of glaucoma, nearsightedness, past injuries to the eyes and steroid use.

TREATMENT

The aim of the treatment is to lower the intra-ocular pressure in order to reduce damage to the optic nerve and save the remaining vision.  This can be achieved through eye drops, laser surgery or drainage mechanisms.
