For starters, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. We all know that your diet significantly influences your overall health, and your eye health is no exception. The above is because your eyes need certain nutrients to function at their best. In addition, certain nutrients or lack thereof play a part in certain eye conditions such as cataracts or macular degeneration. Essential nutrients include fatty fish like tuna or salmon, spinach, kale, carrots, citrus fruits like oranges, eggs, and nuts.
Smoking can contribute to eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and optic nerve damage. For example, smokers are twice as likely to develop macular degeneration and three times more likely to develop cataracts.
Good sunglasses will protect your eyes against harmful UV rays from the sun. UV rays can accelerate macular degeneration and also cataract formation. So make sure the sunglasses block out UVA and UVB. Pair your sunglasses with a hat which will also provide extra protection.
The use of digital screens is one of the leading causes of vision-related problems such as blurred vision, dry eyes, eye strain, and headaches. Therefore, when using a screen, please adopt the 20-20-20 rule and please make sure to have your prescription updated, blink more frequently and consult your optometrist if symptoms persist.
Lastly, get into the habit of having frequent complete eye examinations so that an optometrist can thoroughly examine the health of your eyes. Early diagnosis and intervention are always better than late treatment!
