Spring Is Here, And Your Eyes Might Feel It First
Spring means warmer days, more time outside and everything starting to bloom again. But for some of us, the change of season also brings itchy, red or watery eyes.
Is it spring… or your allergies?
Pollen from grasses, trees and other plants can trigger seasonal eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis. Common symptoms include itching, redness, burning and watery eyes, and they may appear alongside sneezing or a stuffy nose.
As tempting as it may be, try not to rub irritated eyes. Rubbing can make the irritation worse. A cool compress may help soothe discomfort, and artificial tears can sometimes help rinse allergens from the surface of the eye.
Don’t forget your sunglasses
Spring also means spending more time outdoors, making good sunglasses an everyday essential, not simply a fashion accessory.
UV radiation from the sun can damage the eyes over time. The National Eye Institute recommends choosing sunglasses that block 99–100% of both UVA and UVB radiation, and wearing them even on cloudy days.
And yes, that applies to children too. Building good eye-protection habits early is one more way to look after their vision while they enjoy the outdoors.
Know when your eyes need more than a spring refresh
Not every red, uncomfortable or watery eye is caused by an allergy. Eye allergies can share symptoms with other eye conditions, which is why ongoing or troublesome symptoms are worth having checked rather than simply treating them yourself.
So, as you head into the new season, add your eyes to your spring checklist.
More sunshine, more time outdoors and clearer days ahead, make sure you’re seeing them at your best.

Your vision can change gradually, so it is not always obvious when your glasses or contact lens prescription needs updating. Instead, you may notice small signs that your eyes are working harder than usual.
Every day, I get a question from my patients: Is a cheap, ready-made reader that you buy from the pharmacy unhealthy for your eyes?
