What is Tonometry?

Tonometry is a non-invasive procedure to measure the eye’s fluid pressure. Critical in the diagnosis of Glaucoma. A thorough examination of the Optic nerve is crucial to test for Glaucoma. What better tool to use than an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner to obtain a detailed scan of the Optic Nerve?

This machine is one of the first machines we use during eye exams. It blows a small puff of air onto the eye. One of the two sensors then measures how deeply the eye was applanated, and the other measures how quickly it returned to a standard shape. According to this, it then calculates the pressure in the eye. Some people may find this machine intimidating because of the small puff of air blown onto the eye surface. Therefore, we perform this first test first so that the patient can relax.

Von Grafe developed the first machine to test the pressure in the eye in 1865. Technology has evolved over the years, and various methods of measuring pressure have been used. We use the Reichert Xpert NCT Plus non-contact tonometer. The Reichert company is 185 years old and continues to be a global leader in the design and manufacturing of diagnostic equipment.

We do not settle for only a “Glaucoma pressure test.” Instead, we thoroughly examine the Optic Nerve, including the thickness of the RNFL and the Ganglion Cell Complex.

Fruits and vegetables are good sources of Vit A, Vit C, Vit E, and the antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin, compounds known to protect against oxidative stress associated with damage to the optic nerve and other tissues of the eye in glaucoma.

We aim to make your eye care experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. We try to serve you as our patient with excellence, and it is for this reason that we do not just provide a simple, easy eye test. No, we do an extensive eye examination on every patient who walks through our doors.
